In order to be considered for membership, you must be 18 years of age or older, reside or work in Hawthorne, NJ, be in good physical condition, and possess a valid driver’s license. Once you have submitted an application, you will be interviewed by the membership committee and undergo a background check. Upon approval, you will need to obtain certification as an AHA healthcare provider in CPR and enroll in a 180-hour EMT training course. All training is at no cost to you. Upon EMT certification, you are put on probation for a minimum of 6 months. At the end of this period, your performance will be evaluated by your crew members and with your consent a recommendation will be made for full membership and privileges.
If you are a physician, physician assistant, registered nurse or advanced practice nurse, it is possible for you to take an abbreviated 24-hour EMT Renewal course and then sit for the state written exam. We will provide training in the specific skills required for for taking such an accelerated course prior to doing so.
If you are an expired EMT, you can also recertify by taking the abbreviated 24-hour EMT Renewal course and then sit for the state written exam as well.
We request that you be available for one
12-hour shift a week and a 6 hour weekend
shift approximately every month. It is also
requested you stay in town when on duty to
ensure a quick response.
